The goals of the Porter's Arts Department are rooted in posing problems and seeking solutions. We work with students to develop creativity and critical thinking skills, heighten awareness of the natural and imagined worlds, and stimulate imaginative powers.
Teachers in the Arts Department are working artists. They frequently perform or exhibit their own work in addition to sharing their knowledge and experience with students. The arts facilities at Porter's are state-of-the-art, offering the various disciplines their own individual spaces, each renovated to include the innovative elements necessary for quality work.
The program is enhanced by interdisciplinary projects and exchanges of information that occur through visiting artists and lecturers as well as between the arts and other academic areas. The Fritzinger, Wilkie Bilkie and Visiting Artist funds bring well-known artists to campus each year for concerts, lectures and critiques. Past guests have included Zana Briski, The Young Eight, Maria Tallchief, the Limon Dance Company, Joy Brown, Rachel Siporin, George Chaplin, and Chris Gustin.
Through steady interaction with the arts, both in the classroom and in the community, we nurture our students to be expressive, articulate and discerning individuals, who, through art, discover a spiritual, physical, intellectual and intuitive sense of themselves and the world.
