 | | Porter's Raises Awareness for Children's Rights
4/9/2009 On April 8, the O Ambassadors club of Miss Porter's School welcomed the Roots of Action tour, featuring speakers Katie Meyler and Michel Chikwanine. During their keynote presentation, Ms. Meyler and Mr. Chikwanine spoke candidly about the poverty and hardships faced by children worldwide, and shared the personal experiences that influenced them to take action to better the lives of others. Through volunteer work, mentorship programs, and community education, including the Roots of Action tour, Ms. Meyler and Mr. Chikwanine have made a difference in the lives of countless individuals, and have encouraged many others to do the same. They challenged Porter's students to take action in their own lives, starting by sharing what they learned from the presentation. Following the presentation, Ms. Meyler and Mr. Chikwanine held a three-hour interactive workshop for a smaller group of students interested in building leadership skills.
A joint project of Oprah's Angel Network and Free the Children, O Ambassadors targets the issues faced by millions of children worldwide including a lack of schooling, poverty, child labor, involvement in the military and other atrocities. The program encourages young people to educate themselves about their global community and to strive to give these children life, opportunity and voice. At Porter's, the O Ambassadors club encourages members to be informed and involved in the right of children to education.
Caroline Roberts, Student Tri-Head of Porter's O Ambassadors club, encourages other students to visit www.oambassadors.org to create their own group. Her own involvement has been a transformative experience. "Through O Ambassadors, I am able to reach out and help people I never thought I could," she states. Fellow Student Tri-Head Olayemi Otun agrees, "Being involved in O Ambassadors has provided us with countless unforgettable experiences and has contributed greatly to the globally conscious students that we are today."
Porter's active O Ambassadors chapter inspired Oprah's Angel Network's sponsorship of the Roots of Action tour for the school. Faculty Member and Club Advisor Marlo Marrero notes that the sponsorship is in recognition of the club's efforts, "It is a testament to the students' hard work for the last couple of years in raising awareness, locally and globally." |
