Porter's Welcomes Michele Norris

4/20/2012
In 1961, Marjorie Wiggin Prescott 1911 established the Prescott Program Fund to bring distinguished lecturers and performers to Miss Porter's School. On Friday, April 13, Miss Porter's School welcomed NPR radio journalist and author of The Grace of Silence Michele Norris as Prescott Program speaker. Ms. Norris engaged Porter's students by attending a dinner discussion and giving a presentation to the entire school community.

Ms. Norris is one of the most trusted voices in American journalism as one of the hosts of NPR's flagship afternoon broadcast All Things Considered. Before joining NPR in 2002, Ms. Norris spent almost 10 years as a reporter for ABC News in the Washington Bureau. She has also worked as a staff writer for the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, and the Los Angeles Times. Ms. Norris is the recipient of numerous awards, including 2009 Journalist of the Year by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and the Alfred I. Dupont-Columbia University Award for excellence in broadcasting (with NPR Morning Edition Host Steve Inskeep). A four-time Pulitzer Prize entrant, Ms. Norris has also been honored with NABJ's 2006 Salute to Excellence for her coverage of Hurricane Katrina; the University of Minnesota's Outstanding Achievement Award; and the 1990 Livingston Award. She also earned both an Emmy award and a Peabody award for her contribution to ABC News' coverage of 9/11. The Grace of Silence is her first book.
