Porter's field hockey played with intensity against an aggressive St. Luke's team Saturday afternoon. After some solid offensive pressure from forwards Clare Porter ('19), Merritt Hall ('19), Morgan Mastrangelo ('19) and Melina Belenardo ('20), Porter's got on the board with a scrappy shot from Mel Belenardo half way through the first half. Approximately ten minutes into the 2nd half, St. Luke's got a lucky breakaway and scored, tying the game up 1-1. Shortly afterwards, Audrey McMillan ('20), who had been playing a phenomenal game, was injured by a hard shot to the foot and she had to leave the game. Morgan Pickett ('20) stepped into Audrey's position at left mid and did a nice job keeping the ball in the offensive end. Thanks to the efforts of Morgan and other midfielders Cricket Barnes ('19) and Rachel Hart ('20), and defenders Jackie Witt ('20), Grace Bergin ('19), and Natalie Brennan ('20), Porter's dominated the majority of the 2nd half after that point, with several other chances to secure the win. Despite a strong effort, the game ended in a tie and the sudden-victory 7v7 OT period began. St. Lukes started with the ball and made a run at the goal, but defenders Natalie Brennan ('20) and Grace Bergin ('19) shut down the offensive pressure and Rachel Hart ('20) and Cricket Barnes ('19) helped feed the ball up to a determined Clare Porter ('19) on the forward line. Clare fought her way through the defense and made a perfect cross from the right wing over to Mel Belenardo ('20) who was wide open in front of the net. After her first shot bounced off the goalie's pads, Mel got the rebound and lifted it into the net for the win 1 minute into the OT! It was an exciting and well-deserved win for the Porters' field hockey team. Elizabeth Muller ('19) had 7 great saves in the net to help secure the win.
The next match up for Porter's is against Loomis Chaffee on Wednesday, 10/17/18 at 2:30 pm on Oaklea field.
