Nice Team Win Over NMH

Porter's showed a lot of grit on Saturday. Because of ACTs and other commitments, we rolled in with nine players. Luckily, we got reinforcements just before game time when juniors Natalie Brennan and Tyler Smith arrived. They weren't a moment too soon as junior co-captain Juliana Diamantis injured her shoulder attempting a diving catch early on and Brennan had to take over at center batting leadoff.

In short, this was a great softball game--par for the course when these two teams get together. It was tied 1-1 after one inning and 3-3 after five. Unfortunately for Northfield Mount Hermon, their talented freshman pitcher heard a pop in her arm in the fifth. She bravely finished the inning, but she was relegated to first base duties for the last two innings. Her replacement pitched well, but we were able to touch her up for three runs in the sixth as she tried to find the strike zone. Maddie Guilmartin ('21) had the decisive hit with a two-run single to the shortstop hole with the bases loaded. Junior Morgan Pickett, who has been stinging the ball lately to bad luck, had by far her best game of the season. She had three sharp singles on the day and five putouts from second base, including the last two of the game as NMH was threatening in the bottom of the 7th.

Senior co-captain Jess Sardilli was a magician on the mound. She mixed up her pitches well and had great chemistry with her sophomore sister Aimee behind the plate. She finished with seven strikeouts. To hold a hard-hitting team like NMH to four runs in seven innings was nothing short of remarkable. She worked in and out of trouble and had good support from the defense. She was also on the base paths herself five times. The outfielders got a workout today, but they hit their cutoffs and limited extra bases. Freshman Nia Carroll made two great catches in right field, robbing the same NMH batter.

Our second straight win leaves us with a record of 2-3 and made the long trip back to Farmington more fun, particularly with Natalie's stand-up comedy routine.
