Advanced Courses

Advanced Interdisciplinary Seminar (AIS) courses for 11th and 12th graders provide rich experiences and cultivate exceptional thinkers by supplementing and balancing our extensive Advanced Placement (AP) offerings. AIS courses combine the intellectual rigor of AP courses with interdisciplinary, experiential, and project-based learning that push students beyond what is required by most AP courses by forcing them to think more deeply, to ask questions, to evaluate information, and to make connections between related topics.

A student who has demonstrated a high level of achievement and has a strong interest in a certain subject might consider taking an AIS course, in consultation with her advisor and college counselor. The student should consult the individual course descriptions in this guide for information on offerings and requirements.

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Courses

A student who has demonstrated a high level of achievement and has a strong interest in a certain subject might consider taking an AP course, in consultation with her advisor and college counselor. The student should consult the individual course descriptions in this guide for information on offerings and requirements. Students wishing to register for an AP course must carefully check the prerequisite courses and grades listed under each course description. A student who does not meet the prerequisites may petition the department chair for special permission to enroll. A petition will be considered based on the student’s previous record, not on promises of future effort or performance.

Each student enrolled in an AP course must decide whether to take the corresponding AP examination. The College Board charges a fee for each AP exam, which Porter’s will bill to individual student tuition accounts. In 2019 the fee for each AP exam is $94. Starting with the 2019-20 school year, the College Board is requiring fall registration for AP Exams. Porter’s will assist with this process in the fall. The exams will still take place in May.
