The Arts Department offers a variety of dramatic arts courses, including Acting for Stage and Film, Advanced Topics in Theater, and Play Production: from Page to Stage which culminates in a fully realized production.
In addition to classes, the department produces three annual extracurricular productions open to all students from Porter's and Avon Old Farms Schools. Porter's students also participate in the three productions presented at AOF each year, for a total of six collaborative extracurricular productions. Recent productions include: The Importance of Being Earnest, Working, The Pirates of Penzance, Circle Mirror Transformation, Our Town, Les Belles-Soeurs, and original student work.
Live theater offers an opportunity for the audience, technical artisans, and actors alike. It allows us to share joyful entertainment, hear great dramatic literature, and explore the human condition. At Porter's, dramatic arts are a thriving part of our academic and extracurricular life; they teach important 21st century skills, build students' confidence, and promote collaboration and teamwork.
Porter's extracurricular program provides myriad opportunities for technical theater artisans. Students stage manage and assistant direct shows. They design, build, and curate the sets, costumes, props, lighting, sound, and more for every production.
