The music program at Miss Porter's School provides opportunities for all aspects of the student to be educated. Students have the opportunity to be trained as solo performers, through individual lessons and junior/senior recitals; chamber performers, through our chamber music classes, Chamber Ensembles and Chamber Singers; and large group performers by participating in Concert Choir, Jazz Band, and the student pit orchestra for the musical. They also have the opportunity to audition for ensembles outside of the Porter's community, including CMEA Northern Regionals, CMEA All-State, NAFME All-National Honor Ensembles.
In addition to performance classes, Porter's offers music courses in Introduction to Music Theory, Advanced Placement Music Theory, and a holistic music class, Exploration of Music, which combines aspects of music history, music theory, composition, and performance. Additionally, we offer an afternoon Music Enrichment program that is tailored to the needs of the students. The space is currently being used for student collaborations, individual practice, college audition preparations, and composition. Porter's also has an all-senior, student-run a cappella group.
Porter's is fortunate to be in a community of students and adults who actively support the arts. The seats are always filled for the wide variety of student and faculty performances, ranging from solo and small chamber group recitals. Institutionally, we have an endowed fund, the Fritzinger, which allows us to bring renowned musicians to campus every year. Past guests include Isaac Stern, Barbara Hendricks, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
