Porter's Welcomes New Varsity Lacrosse and Field Hockey Coaches

In the fall of 2018, Porter's will welcome two new faculty members who will also be taking over varsity athletic programs. We could not be more excited to welcome these game-changing coaches and educators to our community!
Bridget Shaffrey will teach history and serve as head coach of varsity lacrosse. Ms. Shaffrey graduated from Bucknell University in 2017, where she played Division I lacrosse.
As a member of the lacrosse team, Ms. Shaffrey entered the Patriot League Quarterfinals twice and was elected a senior leader in her final year. Prior to Bucknell, she was a two-time High School Academic All-American in 2012 and 2013 and a High School All-American in 2013, as well as captain of her high school lacrosse team, all-district and all-region, and team MVP for two years in a row. While at Bucknell, Ms. Shaffrey was named to the Patriot League Honor Roll and the 1st All-Academic Team for the Patriot League during all four years that she played. Ms. Shaffrey also coached for a summer during college with the Storm Lacrosse Club, coaching 13- and 14-year-old girls. Currently, she is working on a master’s degree at the University of Cambridge in England and continues to coach and play lacrosse. There, she has helped coach a top-ranked team to the national finals in the United Kingdom, where they ended up placing second in the country.

Nelle Andrews will be joining the Porter’s faculty as an English teacher and the head coach of varsity field hockey. Ms. Andrews graduated from Connecticut College in 1998, where she was a four-year starter for the field hockey team, serving as a co-captain in her senior year. There, she was chosen by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association to be a Division III Second Team All-American, in addition to earning the titles of North-South Division III All-Star and team MVP. Ms. Andrews comes to Porter’s from Farmington High School, where she has been an English teacher and head field hockey coach for 19 years. During this time, she has been voted “Coach of the Year” by the Connecticut Field Hockey Coaches Association twice, and once by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.  She also served as an assistant coach and site director for the USA Field Hockey Futures Program, Connecticut Region for 10 years. Ms. Andrews is an executive board member of HTC Youth!, Inc., which is a nonprofit organization focused on promoting healthful, educational, and recreational activities for the development of field hockey at the local level for youths in Connecticut and in surrounding states. She is also a member of the U.S. Field Hockey Association, National Field Hockey Coaches Association, and the Connecticut Coaches Associations. She has served as a member of the CIAC All-State Committee, Connecticut Field Hockey Hall of Fame Committee, and a voting member of the Hartford Courant Coaches Poll for field hockey for over 10 years. In September of 2018, she will be inducted into the Connecticut Field Hockey Hall of Fame!
