Athletics at Porter's

Athletics are a fundamental part of the overall educational experience at Miss Porter's School.  The athletic program strives to teach students physical and mental skills, self-discipline, and sportsmanship while motivating athletes to strive for excellence. We believe the value of participation is lifelong and that the team experience builds foundational skills of leadership, teamwork, competition, commitment, integrity, and achievement.

Athletics at Porter's are competitive and require a level of commitment above and beyond other after school activities. At the varsity level in particular, the most capable and committed athletes constitute teams. In doing so, these teams aim to refine athletic skills to compete at an advance level and excel in competitions.  All athletes are expected to promote and demonstrate respect, resilience, courage, patience, and commitment to their teammates and with adults.

Porter's competes in the Founders League with Choate Rosemary Hall, Ethel Walker, Hotchkiss, Kent, Kingswood-Oxford, Loomis Chaffee, Taft and Westminster schools. At the end of each season, Porter's competes against the area's most competitive teams in the New England Championships.

Athletes of the Week: Lucy Taglich '19 and Maddie Guilmartin '21

This week's athletes of the week are Lucy Taglich '19 from varsity volleyball and Maddie Guilmartin '21 from junior-varsity volleyball.

Lucy Taglich '19 played a pivotal role in varsity volleyball's win over the previously undefeated Greenwich Academy on Saturday. Coming off an injury, she had her best game yet at the middle position, providing the team with multiple blocks and kills. The most important play came during the fourth set, as Greenwich tried to mount a comeback. With a block from Taglich '19, the momentum shifted and Porter's capitalized to take the win.

Maddie Guilmartin '21 played the best game of her volleyball career so far in a Porter’s uniform on Saturday. She moved around the court like a force of nature, from back to front to side and back again. She consistently flashed to where she could play the ball, but, despite the speed with which she darted, she planted her feet for accurate passes and returns. Her serving was also exceptionally dependable, and she even found her way into the front line from the back on several occasions. Furthermore, she was a vocal presence on the sideline, giving sound advice and encouragement to her teammates. Put simply, she had a complete performance on and off the court.

Congratulations on athlete of the week, Lucy Taglich and Maddie Guilmartin.

Athletes of the Week: Amy Wang '21 and Emily Homiller '19

This week's athletes of the week are Amy Wang '21 from cross country and Emily Homiller '19 from equestrian.

Amy Wang '21 played a crucial role in the cross country teams third place finish this past Saturday at the Gordy Glover Invitational. Wang '21 came in with a time of 24:11, a personal record for her by almost a minute, and in the last 100 meters edged out a Sacred Heart runner, beating her by less than four seconds. Porter's ended up beating Sacred Heart by one point.

Emily Homiller '19 had a great showing at this year's first home show at Avon Valley Show Stables. Homiller '19 earned second place in varsity open equitation on the flat and third place in the varsity open equitation over fences at 2'6" for a total of nine team points. Throughout the season she had demonstrated great leadership qualities and is a great role model to her teammates.

Congratulations on athletes of the week, Amy Wang '21 and Emily Homiller '19.

Athletes of the Week: Sara Park '19 and Amelia Zhao '19

This week's athletes of the week are Sara Park '19 from varsity badminton and Amelia Zhao '19 from cross country.

Sara Park '19 has shown much determination this semester to improve her technique, her skill set, and her focus. Despite some tough games this season, Park '19 has played with intelligence and strength, not once losing her nerve or concentration. When she lost to a more experienced player from East Hartford, she came back stronger, learning from her opponent and herself. She is a positive role model for the rest of the Badminton team and she brings a great energy to every practice.

Amelia Zhao '19 has been a persistent and hardworking member of the team for four years now. Now, as a captain, her intrinsic drive provides motivation and encouragement to her fellow teammates. She is always ready to do one more hill, lead us all in a sun salutation at the end of practice, or to do an extra workout after a tough workout in the rain. Her team looks up to her and she is an inspiration to us all.

Congratulations to this week's athletes of the week, Sara Park '19 and Amelia Zhao '19.
