Visual & Performing Arts
Porter’s Dance Program is proud to be considered among the best dance programs at the secondary school level. We believe in the development of the overall dancer with a curriculum that explores dance from many perspectives: technical, performing, choreographic and aesthetic.

Dance is a collaborative and creative process. Here at Porter’s, the dancers are an integral part of this process. They don’t simply learn a movement phrase but are taught where movement initiates. They learn to critically analyze dance through interpretation and evaluation of themselves and others. In this supportive yet demanding environment, students are encouraged to find their own artistic voice through improvisation and the opportunity to create choreography.

Porter's offers Ballet, Jazz and Modern Dance as the technical base for the Dance program, with elective classes offered in improvisation, Pilates body conditioning, Hip Hop and African dance, as well as other styles and techniques.

Classes are open to the novice as well as students performing at the pre-professional level. Dance classes held during the academic day for arts credit include Dance 1 and Advanced Dance. Our more advanced students may audition for our student dance company, Dance Workshop. Girls accepted into Dance Workshop dance 10-12 hours per week. All students have the opportunity to work with an array of professional guest artists through the company and community-wide master classes.

Our stunning 3,500 square foot Gaines Dance Barn is equipped with mirrors, a sound system and sprung wood floor. Each year the company holds three performances in the Gaines Dance Barn, a large-scale performance in the Hacker Theater and a number of off-campus performances throughout Connecticut. Our talented dancers work at the professional level, performing outside the school at the Connecticut High School Dance Festival and along with professional companies at the Ted Hershey Dance & Music Marathon among other festivals and performances.

Porter’s dancers are well-trained for any college dance program. A number of our Porter's alumnae currently are dance majors or minors, or participate in dance companies in colleges and universities, such as New York University, George Washington University, Middlebury College, American University, Goucher College, Pomona College, Tufts University, and Swarthmore College.
