Weekly Recap: 9/6-9/9

Scores and highlights from September 6 through September 9.
Wednesday, September 6
Varsity Soccer vs. Wolcott High School: W 6-0
Recap: This was one of those games when the score takes a back seat to players building chemistry on the field and the whole squad seeing the field. Wolcott started with more purpose and moved the ball quickly in the middle of the field, it took Porter's 15+ minutes to get any real control of the ball. The girls in green looked most dangerous when Wolcott had the ball in our defensive third as once the ball was won the pace in which we went forward was difficult to stop. Mid way through the first half Carlyn Kosienski '19 took a touch (from a Laura Gouvin '20 pass) 25 yards out and lifted the ball over the keeper’s head to score the first goal of the season. It was 2-0 soon after as Kyla Gallagher '20 received a pass from Gouvin '20 and after moving the ball from her left onto her right found the back of the net from the edge of the area. A third was added before half time as senior Sydni Scott '18 crossed the ball in for Gallagher '20 to add her second as the ball crept over the line.

With more confidence, space and time on the ball the second half was slower but more controlled. Wolcott's resilience in the 60th minute was broken as freshman Natalie Godoy '21 slipped Gouvin '20 in with a clever pass, the impressive center midfielder took two positive touches and then made it 4-0. Freshman Sam Halligan laid the ball off for Godoy '21 who made it 5-0 with a first time left footed shot from the edge of the area. Gabby Owens '19 headed in a corner (from a Kosienski '20 corner) with 4 minutes left to complete the scoring.

Varsity Field Hockey vs. Cheshire Academy: L 1-2
Recap: Porter's had a strong home opener against Cheshire Academy on Saturday.  Newcomers Mckenna Cutler '19 and Melina Belenardo '20 were essential in the center of the field. Meanwhile, Captains Adi Jalinskas '18 and Gaelen Carroll '18 did great work to organize and lead the front and back lines.  Porter's scored early in the first half with an assist from Clare Porter '19 and a tip in from Gabby Aucello '19.

Varsity Soccer vs. Cheshire Academy: W 7-0
Recap: Laura Gouvin '20 opened the scoring after latching on to Gabby's knockdown from a corner. Five minutes later Gouvin '20 got her second of the game after Carlyn Kosienski '19 won the ball back from Cheshire's central defender. Freshman Natalie Godoy ran through on goal after she capitalized on a defensive error and just after Maddie Duchesneau '18 stopped a certain goal in the 6-yard box Kyla Gallagher '20 received a clever pass from Sam Halligan '21 and made no mistake from 8 yards out.

The second half was slower but resulted in a little more possession from Porter's, the team looked at a new shape and the whole squad managed time on the field. The fifth goal was scored from the PK spot after Godoy '21 was brought down just inside the 18-yard box. Lauren Schramm '20 scored her first varsity goal after Sydni Scott '18 played a perfectly weighted pass to the overlapping Mackenzie Kievman '18 who placed a cross into Schramm's '20 path. Kayleen Procanik '19 then followed Schramm's '20 footsteps (with her first varsity goal) and finished the scoring after Shayla Procanik '19 assisted her.
