On what was by far the hottest day of the season, it was also Senior day, and the final game of the 2017 Varisty Softball season. While both teams managed to get runners in scoring position in the first inning, neither team was able to score a run, the same was true for the second inning. In the top of the third Westover hit the ball hard and was able to score two runs to take the lead, but that would not last for long as after Senior Hannah Zukowski led with a single followed by Senior Maya Silva-Thompson who hit the ball hard to secure a triple and then scored on the same play with head-up base running.
Porter's was not done there, with a tie game going into the bottom of the fourth inning, Jenna Hall started the ball rolling with a triple, Zukowski drew a walk and Maya hit to the right to allow Zukowski to advance to third and Hall to score. Jessica Sardilli added a well placed single to allow Zukowski to score followed by Lucinda DeLaney hitting a solid line drive for a single. Porter's took the lead, 4 - 2. 4 runs were put into the book in the bottom of the fifth starting with Juliana Diamantis and Hall scoring on a mishandled ball hit off of the bat of Zukowski. Gaelen Carroll and Zukowski both scored as teammates put the ball into play.
Westover did not go down without a fight, posting two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, but in the bottom of the same inning, Porter's sealed the game with 6 more runs crossing the plate, highlighted by Zukowski hitting a triple and Silva-Thompson securing her second hit of the game.
For the final time, the battery of Sardilli and Zukowski, kept the Westover offense on their toes, striking out 8 in the win.
Porter's has posted their best season 10 - 5 over the past several year. They finish in 6th position in the conference, just out of contention for play-offs (only the top 4 team are given a spot in the play-offs). With several freshmen on the team and new players coming on to the team next year, Porter's will look to improve their standing next year with the drive to see post-season play.
Thank you to all of the fans that supported us along the way!! And a special thank you to the parents and underclassmen who made Senior day very special for a very special group of seniors, you will all be greatly missed.
VSB class of 2017 - Manager Karen Bang, 3rd base De'Jah Jennings, 1st base Maya Silva-Thompson and Catcher Hannah Zukowski.
We all wish Hannah much success as she will continue her softball career at Trinity College next year!
At first glance a 11 - 0 loss looks like one team dominated the other, but that was not the case on this Friday afternoon. Westminster came to the game undefeated, boasting a 11 - 0 season at that point and Porter's a respectful 9 - 4 season. While Westi did hold Porter's scoreless the score was 4 - 0 through 6 innings. Porter's battery of Jessica Sardilli and Hannah Zukowski kept the Westi offense "off balance" according to the Westminster Head Coach Mitch Overbye.
The defense behind the battery was active, grabbing hard hit fly balls out of the air, stopping line drives from getting through the infield, and even a double play tag out to end the top of the 7th by shortstop Jenna Hall.
The Westminster defense was just too good, making play after play when Porter's hit the ball hard. Porter's was able to get 6 players on base in the loss, but was not able to get a runner to cross the plate.
Porter's will host Westover at 3:15 for their final game of the season.
From the first pitch to the last this game was filled with excitement! Jenna Hall '20 attacked hard as the lead-off batter hitting a single and advancing to third, that was as close as she would get to home that inning as the next 3 batters were retired in order. K-O also came out swinging and managed to get two runs over the plate in the first inning.
The second inning was quiet on both sides, it was the third that put Porter's on the board. Hall starting things rolling once again with a close eye to draw a walk, she was scored when Gaelen Carroll '18 put the ball into play and K-O made a throwing error. Carroll advanced to 2nd on the errant throw and then to third when the pitcher threw a wild pitch when K-O intentionally walked Hannah Zukowski '17. Carroll scored when Maya Silva-Thompson '17 hit a single. With the score tied, Jessica Sardilli '19 reached first on an error which also allowed Silva Thompson to score putting Porter's in the lead 3 - 2. The lead was short-lived as K-O managed to get two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Charlotte Whalen '20 led the top of the 4th inning with a triple and then scored when Juliana Diamantis '20 put the ball into play allowing Whalen to score....TIE GAME! Both defenses played strong while on each team the offense tried to piece together a run, to no avail, the regular inning game ended in a 4 - 4 tie.
Top of the 8th inning Porter's got a runner on base right away but were unable to cross the plate with a run. K-O got a lucky break getting their lead-off batter on base when a ball hit back to the Sardilli got misdirected from hitting off of her foot. With a runner on first Porter's defense retired the next two batters in order with the runner advancing to second base. K-O's next batter hit a solid line drive up the middle to allow the runner to score and to end the game.
It was a well-fought game on both sides. The Porter's defense was solid led by the battery of Sardilli and Zukowski and backed by great plays by De'Jah Jennings '17 at third and Hall at short. Silva Thompson was busy at first receiving balls from her infielders while Natalie Brennan '20 had a great catch in right field to take away an extra-base hit from K-O.
Porter's will host Westminster on Friday, May 12th at 4:45. (NOTE: this is a change in the schedule)
