  • vs. Pingree

On Wednesday afternoon Porter's Varsity Soccer hosted last years New England Champions Pingree School.

For the second year in a row, the girls in green made the postseason tournament, this year Class B was stronger than ever as the top 6 seeded teams all had only lost 1 single game during the regular season. Pingree started the game on the front foot and were physical in their approach all over the field, only 10 minutes into the contest senior Sydni Scott '18 was injured in a 50/50 challenge and could not continue. In the early stages, Carlyn Kosienski '19 had an early chance but put her effort just wide of the far post. Pingree were dangerous in the final third with #9 and #10 combining successfully for much of the half. Mid way through the first half Pingree was gifted a goal on a corner kick as Porter's Varsity left their player unmarked. A few changes were made at half time and the home team found another level of desire that turned the game around.

Four minutes had gone in the second half when Kosienski '19 won the ball and played it to Laura Gouvin '20 who ran from the half way line before hitting an unstoppable shot from 20+ yards beating Pingree's Duke-bound goalkeeper thus bringing the home team level. Porter's had two further opportunities to win the game either side of having a goal being narrowly ruled out for offside.

Both teams threatened during overtime and both had opportunities to win the game before settling the game on PK's. After playing 100+ minutes of soccer and with both teams giving everything they had it was sad that someone would lose in this way, but there had to be a winner and it was Pingree that won the tense PK shoot out 5-4.

Congratulations to the girls who had another great season and who continue to maintain the level of the program. Thank you to the seniors for what they brought to the team both on and off of the field, a remarkable turnaround in the past 4 years. See you all next year!

  • vs. Green Farms Academy

Porter's Varsity Soccer made the long journey to Westport to play Green Farms Academy on their senior day. This was the last regular season game for the team.

During the first half Porter's had control of the game and the ball, however, the defenders struggled in possession to break the Green Farms forward line and find our midfielders. Once our central midfielders found possession we lacked a creative spark in the final third and therefore any real chances that we created were from distance. 15 minutes before the end of the first half Carlyn Kosienski '19 swung in a corner and Gabby Owens '19 headed home.

The second half was a little more open as Natalie Godoy '21 burst through the opponents and slotted Sydni Scott '18 through who made no mistake with a first-time finish. Laura Gouvin '20 ran 65+ yards on her own before eventually finishing with her left foot calmly into the bottom right-hand corner to make the score 3-0. The final goal was scored by Olivia Grommers '18 after Scott '18 was played through by Sam Halligan '21 the ball then found its way to Grommers '18 who
had an easy tap in to complete the scoring for the afternoon.

Over the last two years, Porter's Varsity Soccer have only lost 1 regular season game and finishes this year with a 15-1-5 record.  Porter's hosts the Quarter final game this Wednesday at 2pm vs. last years New England champions Pingree (MA) 13-1-2, this is the strongest Class B has looked for a very long time which will make a very exciting post season tournament.

Thank you to all of the parents and fans that continue to support the girls, we look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday.

  • vs. MacDuffie

Porter's Varsity Soccer hosted MacDuffie on senior day. The well-coached and impressive MacDuffie have not lost a regular season game in over two years.

The home team settled into the game and possessed the ball a little bit better than the opponents, however, were too eager to go forward which resulted in too many transitional moments. MacDuffie did a good job of being patient (without the ball) and waiting for a mistake before they would counter and try to get numbers into dangerous positions in Porter's defensive third. Both teams had a few chances with Carlyn Kosienski '19 narrowly putting a free kick over the bar and Sydni Scott '18 firing over from the edge of the 18. With less than ten minutes before the end of the half Laura Gouvin '20 spotted Kayleen Procanik '19 making an intelligent run behind the left back who then played an inviting ball to Scott who lost her marker and then managed to squeeze the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle.

The girls in green edged the second half and Kosienski had a point-blank shot saved from 8 yards out after good work from Scott '18. Natalie Godoy '21 managed to turn her defender well in the later stages but narrowly put the ball wide and then shortly after MacDuffie hit the cross bar from an effort on the left flank.

On senior day we honored 7 girls that have all made a huge contribution to the program. 'Thank You' to Olivia Grommers '18, Mackenzie Kievman 18', Bryn Mathews '18, Evelyn Lewis '18, Sydni Scott '18, Maddie Duchesneau '18 and Naya Lipkens '18 for everything!

Thank you to all of the parents for providing food for the girls and for being part of the celebrations after the game.
The last regular season game is away vs. Green Farms on Saturday at 2.30pm

  • Athlete of the Week: Adi Jalinskas '18

This week's athlete of the week is Adi Jalinskas '18 from varsity field hockey.

Jalinskas '18 has been a model captain and teammate this season. She persists in the face of adversity, loves to train hard, and her favorite days are the ones where she is pushed to work the hardest. She rallies her teammates with her positivity and her competitive drive. We love to witness her sprint ahead to keep a ball in bounds or her quick hand-eye coordination whenever there is an opportunity to tip it in.

Jalinskas '18 was chosen to play in the Western New England Prep School All-Star game, and she led her team to a 4-0 victory, posting 2 of the goals! Arguably, this made her the game's most valuable player. In the face of such amazing competition, it was fantastic to see her create and capitalize on the opportunities to score. Congratulations to the Athlete of the Week, Adi Jalinskas '18.
