  • vs. Kingswood Oxford

Porter's Varsity soccer made the short bus ride to play last year's Class B Quarter Finalists Kingswood Oxford on Tuesday evening.

KO showed energy and determination throughout there home opener and shaded the first half of play. Sydni Scott '18 had an opportunity to take the lead but was stopped by KOs keeper. The field made it difficult to generate any momentum with the ball, which resulted in both teams looking to get forward too much when in possession.

The second half saw Porter's create more opportunities as Scott '18 and Carlyn Kosienski '19 went close from 8 yards out. Maddie Duchesneau '18, Bryn Mathews '18, Mackenzie Kievman '18 and Gabby Owens '19 defended very well and Naya Lipkens '18 and Jenna Hall '20 showed composure when called upon.

In the end, although not pretty to watch, the team can respect the tie and look at it as a point earned rather than two points dropped.
Next up Porter’s varsity travels to class A Greenwich Academy this Saturday for a 1pm kick off.  Greenwich is also unbeaten and is coming off of a 2-1 victory over Choate.

  • vs. Williston Northampton

A long bus ride, hot day and physical and hard working opponents meant for an honest game.

Williston was motivated for their home opener and that was clear with the amount of energy they applied (without the ball) for the first half. The game was stretched as the home team played with a sweeper and did not apply a lot of pressure on Porter’s back four, making it quite difficult to play between the lines. Porter’s Varsity had the majority of possession but was not able to play as quickly as they would like as they looked for a break through. The central midfielders worked hard but needed to take a little more responsibility in asking for the ball back after they play a pass and the forwards needed to be more mobile and less predictable without the ball. With five minutes remaining in the half Laura Gouvin '20 received a pass from Ana Bartkiewicz '20 and without hesitation, Gouvin '20 beat two players before putting Porter’s 1-0 up from 20 yards.

The goal before half-time took the energy out of the home team. Managing the ball and tempo was important in the second half, especially in the heat. Ten minutes into the second half Jenna Hall '20 collected a corner and played a quick long ball that Sydni Scott '18 flicked on, Kyla Gallagher '20 played a clever first time through ball that Gouvin '20 slotted into the bottom corner. Gouvin’s '20 third of the game came after she got on the end of a Lauren Schramm '20 throw in and hit the roof of the net from a tight angle.  Williston scored a consolation in the second half finishing well after winning the ball and transitioning quickly.

Porter’s Varsity now turns their attention to Tuesdays (Founders league and Class B) 4.30pm away game vs. Kingswood Oxford.

  • Porter' Takes on Class B Opponent Marianapolis

The girls in green applied the intensity in the early stages but lacked composure when in possession, often players were passing too early or too late or making the wrong decisions when in possession. Marianapolis created a few chances as Porter's varsity struggled to find any balance and rhythm to their play. On 15 minutes Sydni Scott '18 won a corner and Carlyn Kosienski '19 and Laura Gouvin '20 combined to find Scott '18 who scored her first goal of the season with a first-time finish.

The second half was at a better tempo and Porter's varsity were relentless at entering and creating in the final third. Neat footwork from Scott '18 allowed Natalie Godoy '21 to thread a ball into Gouvin '20 who beat her marker before calmly passing the ball into the back of the net. Gouvin '20 scored her second of the game after she took advantage of an error before beating the keeper from 7 yards. Freshman Sam Halligan scored her first varsity goal after she was played into the area by Kayleen Procanik '19, and Halligan '21 passed the ball into the corner of the goal to make it 4-0. With 10 minutes remaining, Halligan '21 took a corner and played an inviting ball to the back post where Gabby Owens '19 met it with a powerful header completing the scoring.

Next up, the varsity soccer team will travel to face a strong Williston team competing for Class B points. We hope to see you on Saturday.
