Leads Summer Program

Middle School Summer Programs Requirements

Programs fill on a first-come first-serve basis. ​Payment must be made to reserve a space at the time of registration in a program through check or credit card. All payments made after June 15 are non-refundable. Limited scholarships are available. Please apply here.

 The TOEFL and English language proficiency are required for international students.

Sarah Porter Leadership Institute (SPLI) Level 1

Principles and Practice

July 10 – July 16

Porter’s graduates leaders who have the vision, determination, character, and capacity to shape a changing world. Sarah Porter Leadership Institute Level 1, Porter’s longest running summer program, offers middle school girls opportunities to learn, practice, and hone the necessary skills to be a strong female leader. Each day, girls will encounter exciting challenges to facilitate discovery of their personal leadership styles. Leadership activities will focus on problem-solving, skill development, teamwork, and trust. Guest speakers, community service, and a visit to a ropes course provide forums for personal reflection and goal setting.

The Institute for Global Education

Becoming a Change-Maker

July 10 – July 16

Porter’s Institute for Global Education is a path through which students begin to define their own learning opportunities by applying an interdisciplinary approach to exploring the institutions, processes and diverse communities that shape our world, while addressing complex contemporary global issues. Students develop cross-cultural knowledge and communication skills, as well as the ability to think critically about global change with a deeper understanding of the interconnected and interdependent nature of our world. They focus on and address real world issues that are relevant to them and explore how to become a global change-maker. 

Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship

Idea Lab

July 17 – July 23

Porter’s Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Summer Program allows students to study and work in the interconnected fields of programming, digital literacy, global business, digital innovation, design, entrepreneurship, science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. Coursework in TIE prepares students to lead successful, productive lives in a technologically-driven society and economy. Students who participate in this program will learn about and become social entrepreneurs, utilizing technology to address social issues and provide solutions to complex problems that make a positive contribution to the world.

Sarah Porter Leadership Institute (SPLI) Level 2

Resilience and Risk-Taking

July 17 – July 23

Girls who have attended the Sarah Porter Leadership Institute Level 1 gain more extensive leadership experience in Level 2 as they learn to participate both as team members and as leaders as they resolve conflicts, solve problems, and take risks. The program includes an off-campus two-night camping and whitewater rafting trip, community service in the Hartford area, and a culminating experience on the high ropes.

Leading Well

Mind, Body and Soul

July 24 – July 30

In order to lead well, one must know the strengths of their own mind, body and soul. Leading Well is a holistic summer program that teaches middle school girls to be self-aware, empathetic, and globally competent. Based on Porter’s social-emotional learning curriculum, Leading Well gives young girls the tools to flourish and lead locally, globally, and for a lifetime. In a series of mini seminars, workshops, and field trips with community leaders, Leading Well exposes campers to developmentally appropriate tenets of leadership; diversity, equity, and inclusion; global citizenship; and health and wellness. ​

STEAM Research

Science in our Backyard

July 24 – July 30

Join us for a hands-on learning experience in which girls will develop essential skills for the digital age and become empowered to lead in the interdisciplinary field of STEAM (STEM+Art). Porter’s STEAM Institute is an innovative first-of-its-kind program where middle school girls will participate in exciting interactive activities in technology, design, and art while working together with girls from all around the world. Girls develop 21st-century skills such as technology literacy, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking while being exposed to eye-opening on-site field trips and talks from mentors and successful professionals. They also complete the program with a better understanding of global issues, enhanced skills for 21st-century success, and having undertaken a project that they can discuss in future school applications.
