This athlete has proved she is a force to be reckoned with this season. From a game-winning goal in our closing minutes at NMH, to another clutch finish in our 1-0 win at KO. This JV soccer player not only dazzles her competitors in the offensive third, but she was also able to step up big for us in goal making some key saves against Greenwich Academy. This athlete has provided a great boost to our results and game play this season. When push came to shove and the Varsity team needed a goalie to step up it was this athlete that took on the role minutes prior to kick off. She is a fantastic asset to the soccer program here and I look forward to seeing what else Anna has up her sleeves for us.
Brand new to the sport, it is amazing how quickly this new athlete has picked up the technical skills she needs to be successful. Tenacious with clean defensive play and always goal-hungry in the opponents circle, she is an emerging field hockey star. She has the fitness it takes to play the field for the full, regulation time and the kind of coach-ability that makes her a leader on the bench, too. Her anticipation of passes and her ability to maximize her position on the field are truly outstanding. This is a skill which we are certain she has transferred to our sport from her expertise in Ultimate Frisbee. To her often asking, "Is there anything I can do to improve, coach?" we often find ourselves answering, "Just keep up the good work!"
Zoe Brown is the stand-out athlete of the week. After about a week's worth of water time, she led a perfect course down the Charles River. She navigated through several bridges, including the famous Elliot Bridge with a 180-degree turn. The course was also not closed, so this meant, on top of competing against other crews, she made the best calls for her boat when approaching kayakers and motorboats. Despite the commotion, she remained calm and kept to the skills she had practiced on the Farmington river, completing a clean and competitive course; an amazing job for her first time in a regatta! Congratulations Zoe Brown!
This next athlete of the week has shown how to combine hard work with composure and skill. Her grit, determination and sheer desire to compete has helped the Soccer team start with a 4 and 0 season. Statistically this athlete has scored 8 goals in her last 4 games including 3 goals in a 5 minute period against Kingswood Oxford. This athlete is currently the top goal scorer in the prep leagues. Congratulations to Kyla Gallagher for being athlete of the week!
This week's athletes of the week are Marjorie Plants '21 from varsity skiing and Marissa Chow '20 from varsity swimming and diving.
Plants '21 finished 2nd in Giant Slalom and 5th in Slalom assisting Porter's to place 6th as a team at the NEPSAC Class B Alpine Race Championships. Competing against tough competition, with male and female prep school teams from all over Northern New England, Plants '21 had 4 great runs with challenging courses, large ruts that formed from the soft 6 inches of new snow from the previous day's storm. During this past ski season, she has completed every run in all of her races, finished consistently in the top ten with a couple of finishes in the top 3, and daily - worked hard to improve her skiing and racing.
Chow '20 broke the Westminster pool record in the 100 Breaststroke and was on the 200 Medley Relay that also broke the Westminster pool record. That’s two record-breaking swims from this past Saturdays swim meet!
Congratulations on Athlete of the Week, Marjorie Plants '21 and Marissa Chow '20.
