Winter 2024-2025 Athletes of the Week

February 24, 2025

Basketball

This athlete of the week has been an ever-reliable “6th man” since the beginning of the season. She is a dynamic athlete and a defensive phenom. Over the season she has solidified her position in our starting line-up and become a powerhouse under the basket, rebounding, blocking, stealing, and otherwise keeping the opposing team from scoring. We are so excited to have such a great, all-around player on the team. Congrats, Paloma Zayas!

Skiing

This athlete joined the team last year as a freshman. She arrived with a solid foundation of skiing & racing skills that she acquired as a young racer in Vermont. Always willing to learn and improve, always showing up for practice with a smile and an “I can do this” attitude, always willing to help and mentor new racers, and always giving 110%. Last week – as a young racer representing Porter’s at the 2025 NEPSAC Championships held at Cannon Mountain in northern New Hampshire – she rose to the challenge – putting together two Slalom and two Giant Slalom runs, to place in the top twenty in both events (16th in Slalom and 18th in Giant Slalom). Congratulations Ellie Riva!

Basketball

This thirds basketball player simply does not give up. From ball handling to defense to a beautiful jump shot, her play is simply beautiful to watch. In our Wednesday game at Miss Hall’s, we trailed most of the game, and going into the fourth quarter we were down by two. This player scored nine points in the next eight minutes, including running the ball down the court with twelve seconds left and hitting a three, sealing the one point victory. She is such a hard worker and we as her coaches are so incredibly proud of her. We’d like to nominate the GOAT, Christina Guo!

Skiing

This athlete is in her first year as a member of the Porter’s Alpine Race Team. In dry land training – this athlete displayed strength, power, and endurance – all needed to be successful in ski racing. When we finally got on snow in early January, this athlete showed that she was willing to do what was necessary to become a better skier and was highly coachable. Using her strength and desire to improve – she very quickly learned and excelled at many skiing drills that help with the 3 skills necessary to make a carved turn – edging, pressure, and rotary. In her first two races of the season as a member of the JV squad, this athlete earned points for the Varsity squad in both races and has recently been promoted to the Porter’s Alpine Race Team’s Varsity Squad. Congratulations Fiona Gosk!

Basketball

In our game against Rectory, this player stepped UP! She played in numerous capacities and roles throughout the course of the game, highlighting her diversity of talents on the court. She is a full package player: shooter, defender, play caller. Regardless of the line-ups on the court, this player rose to the occasion and supported her teammates to a win. With a high basketball IQ and a willingness to do what it takes to support the team and her teammates, we are thrilled to nominate Sofia Garza!

Skiiing

This athlete is in her second year as a member of the Porter’s Alpine Race Team. Last year, as a new freshman JV racer, this athlete was nervous and anxious for every race she entered, but displayed skills on the course that she did not know she had. This year, as a member of the Varsity squad, she has brought an “I can do this” approach to her dryland and on-snow training – giving 110%. She has volunteered to ski with the JV squad – working on drills to improve her own skiing, assisting with ski drills for our new alpine racers, encouraging them to push and get a little outside their comfort zone, and “to go for it!” She helped motivate all new JV race team members to have fun successful runs down the race course. In last week’s Brigham Ski League’s Varsity Slalom Race at Catamount, this athlete had a tough first run down the race course and then became ill and felt nauseous. But put things together to compete with her second run – overcoming adversity. Porter’s Alpine Race Team AOTW, Ava Long!

Basketball

This Varsity Basketball athlete had an outstanding game on Saturday, helping us to a hard fought 8 point victory over Deerfield Academy. She had 29 points, including 5 three-pointers in the contest, along with 3 rebounds, 4 steals, 4 deflections, and 2 blocked shots. Congratulations Sam Battle on a great game!

Equestrian

This athlete has shown dedication to not only her sport but her equine teammates. Even when not riding, she has been at the barn almost every day staying on top of her horse’s care. She has demonstrated genuine improvements in her riding that show on whatever horse she rides. Athlete of the week for Equestrian is Lydia Winkoswki!

Basketball – JV

This athlete was an all-around game-changer and game-maker during JV Basketball’s game against Hotchkiss on Wednesday. She dominated the paint and played tight on ball from tip-off to the closing buzzer. Her dedication to blocking shots left and right, preventing passes and disrupting plays, and making openings for her teammates to shoot would have been enough for this nomination. And yet, this player took it up another few notches by also taking advantage of the openings her teammates created for her. Because of this dedication and effort, JV Basketball would like to nominate Daisy Bistline for Athlete of the Week!

Basketball – Thirds

This thirds basketball point guard played the game of her life last week against Hotchkiss, netting her first points of the season. Her coaches want to recognize her tenacity and commitment, refusing to give up when the game got tight, protecting the ball against a tough press, running our offense flawlessly, and diving after loose balls. As one of our team captains she was instrumental in our efforts and never wavered in front of a very enthusiastic home crowd, and when the game went into double overtime, she got the team together and told them to keep going. We are so proud of the work this athlete has put in and she always shows up to practices and games with a smile and a great attitude. This week’s athlete of the week is Dahlia Micone!

Equestrian

Last weekend, this athlete qualified for IEA Hunt Seat Equitation Regionals. She earned a cumulative of 18+ points throughout the Fall season. Most of her classes were exceptionally large and competitive, which highlights the work she has put into her riding this year. Wish her luck at Regionals! This athlete of the week is Diane Ferragu!
