Miss Porter’s School students engage with the arts in the community and the classroom. Our practicing artist teachers lead the discovery of artistic expression through individuality, artistic voice and the belief that creativity can be discovered anywhere.
Our founder, Sarah Porter believed the arts are an integral part of a young woman’s education. Still true today, we honor that vision with our integrated disciplines and exposure to a variety of mediums in our art facilities throughout campus and the wider community.

Are you an artist who works in ceramics, or a photographer? Or are you a future museum curator of art history, or a digital technical artist? We also have doodlers, drawers, painters, and printmakers.

Is your passion Art History?
Learn about art from the past so you can challenge the traditional catalog of Art History to prepare for the future.
Students gain skills and practice through exposure to curators, museum professionals, visiting artists, and Porter’s faculty who are practicing artists. They examine multiple artistic perspectives and expressions, cross-cultural art, and historical narrative!
In our student-centered ceramic program, girls learn hand-building and wheel-throwing skills to make functional and sculptural pieces. After gaining foundational skills, students create projects to explore skills they want to develop and master. We work with stoneware and earthenware clay to create pieces in a beautiful, well-ventilated studio. We have nine electric wheels for honing throwing skills. Work is fired in two electric kilns and one gas kiln using a variety of glazes.
In the Digital Art Lab students create artwork using Adobe applications. They craft portfolios using Wacom drawing tablets, desktop computers, or their own laptops. Skill-based instruction, critiques, and access to current media converge in a working atmosphere that participates in the creative explorations of the neighboring studios and Photography lab in the Olin Arts and Science Building.
Do you like to draw or doodle?
Explore the deep and varied exploration of color and image. Drawing is simplistic at its core yet complex in its product. When shared with the community—it can bring joy and provoke thought all at once. Come draw with us.
Are you a cinematographer?
Develop your unique voice in filmmaking as you learn the history of cinematography. The cinematic language is a powerful wonder with emphasized lighting, music, sound design and cinematography. Sharpen your skills and inspire with your short films.
Is painting your passion?
Whether your artistry is representational or abstract, traditional or contemporary—or perhaps a new style all your own, find your creativity in painting with a variety of mediums to fuel your passion. Showcase and share your work on campus and in the wider community.
Are you a fashion or a still-life photographer?
No matter the kind, improve your photography skills in black-and-white, digital or create a new medium not yet developed. Whether you aspire to shoot for Vogue, Fast Company, National Geographic, or candids on your phone, photography is a field where creativity abounds.
Are you an artist who specializes in printmaking?
The bridge between painting and drawing gives you the best of both worlds. Experiment learning intaglio techniques and find the one that you love to showcase your talent.
