Miss Porter’s School Receives Jeffrey Shields Award for Innovation Excellence in School Business Operations as National Business Officers Association

Miss Porter’s School (MPS) is pleased to announce that it has been recognized by the National Business Officers Association (NBOA) to receive the Jeffrey Shields Award for Innovation Excellence in School Business Operations. “The NBOA presents this award to schools that have demonstrated innovation in school business operations through approaches, programs, and/or practices that may serve as a model in our independent school community.”

Rooted in our mission and guided by our Community Call to Action, the MPS board of directors committed the school to dismantle racism within the institution. Each board committee was charged with creating and working towards its anti-racist goal. As such, Porter’s facilitated a powerful solution to improving equity and inclusion by rethinking governance and business practices through an antiracist lens.

In collaboration with Offit Capital, our outsourced investment officer (OCIO), we have leveraged our $170M endowment and $30M operating budget to challenge systemic racism. We first partnered with Offit to seek new Black fund managers and other qualified advisors of color. We then surveyed our 20 largest endowment managers about their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This effort led to fruitful conversation about equitable hiring practices, employee retention and promotion, and organizational policies among other metrics. Led by our finance committee, we also surveyed our largest business partners and revised our RFP process for all contracts with special attention to antiracism policy and practice.

Chief Financial and Operating Officer Michael Bergin shares that an institution’s budget and operations should reflect its mission statement in numbers. Porter’s received the Jeffrey Shields Award for its innovation in approaching business and financial matters through an anti-racist lens. As Bergin states, “Independent schools have enormous economic power, and we must leverage our institutional capacity, in the words of our mission statement, to shape a changing world.”
