Rumsey, Ian

Teacher- Mathematics

Ian has taught math at Porter’s since 2020 and has more than 20 years of experience teaching at independent schools in Brooklyn, New York, and McLean, Virginia. He has a particular passion for calculus and number theory, and his educational philosophy centers on the power of problems to challenge and inform students as they grow as mathematicians. To help center problems in the curriculum, Ian places particular emphasis on developing problem-solving skills and mathematical habits of mind. Beyond the classroom, he coaches varsity volleyball and alpine skiing. Ian is a proud graduate of the University of Connecticut (Go Huskies!) and holds graduate degrees from Wesleyan University and Columbia University. He lives on campus with his family. When he is not working or playing with his girls, Noni and Ellie, Ian can most often be found standing in the Farmington River, fly rod in hand.
