Teaching in action at Miss Porter’s School

Miss Porter’s School is now accepting applicants for teachers in all disciplines.

A Unique Educational Program

Invested in helping young women become the leaders that our world needs?  Interested in being at an independent school with the freedom to quickly adapt its program to the changing world and provide the absolute best in 21st education?  Always looking to bring the most student-centered and innovative practices to your classroom?  Care deeply about issues of equity, inclusion, and justice?  Miss Porter’s is the place for you!

The program at Miss Porter’s is 100% mission focused.  We know today’s students need more than a traditional education to become the informed, bold, resourceful, ethical global citizens that the world needs.  We also know that the world needs the next generation of young women to solve the pressing problems that we face.  Everything we do at Miss Porter’s is aimed at preparing these young women to shape the future of our changing world.

We pride ourselves in offering an interdisciplinary, experiential, collaborative, and project-based curriculum that requires students to explore timeless questions and to address pressing problems. Our teachers are not limited by the time constraints of 40 minute periods and the walls of the classroom.  Our teachers work collaboratively on curriculum and our students work collaboratively on authentic projects that will have an impact on the world.

Our classes are taught in 10-week intensive periods with 90 minute meetings per day to provide conditions for the most innovative teaching and to have students and faculty focused on fewer things at one time.

We practice mastery-based learning and are part of the Mastery Transcript Consortium, a movement of schools aimed at enhancing the student experience and changing the way success is viewed in our society.  As part of our movement to mastery we give standards-based feedback in all of our courses, as we look to shift student focus from grades to growth. Instead of exam periods, we have Demonstrations of Learning in which students share their learning with the community through performance-based assessments.

We are breaking down the walls between departments so that the student course of study is organized around problems in the world rather than artificial academic silos.  We aren’t limited by prescribed AP curricula, but instead go beyond the AP with our own self-designed array of Advanced Interdisciplinary Seminar courses.  At the top level our courses include travel and internship experiences so that our students are practicing skills in an authentic context and learning through experiences.

Lastly, health and wellness and equity and justice are at the heart of everything we do.  We know that learning does not occur, or even matter, if students and faculty are not healthy and well.  And in the words of our Community Call to Action Statement, we know that we must “commit to the work of building a school community rooted in the inherent worth and dignity of each member…grapple with the responsibility of enacting change, both within and beyond our time in Farmington…[in order to] contribute to a more just chapter in our institution’s legacy.”  These values inform all elements of our programming.

A Great Place to Work

The beautiful Miss Porter’s campus is embedded in the historic village of Farmington, CT.  Farmington is a thriving suburb with an excellent school system (including an elementary school across the street from Miss Porter’s) and abundant cultural and recreational opportunities including the Hillstead Museum and ground and the Farmington River and trails, both of which are walking distance from campus.

Farmington is a short drive from both Hartford and West Hartford, both of which have great restaurants, wonderful shops, and plenty of art and culture.  Farmington is also a gateway to the rural areas of western Connecticut, which offer much for the outdoor enthusiast.  And for those in need of a visit to an urban metropolis, Boston and New York are both less than two hours away.

Miss Porter’s provides housing and utilities for most of its faculty, and we have a daycare center on campus.   Our salaries and healthcare plans are competitive, the school contributes to all benefit eligible employee’s retirement accounts, and we provide generous funding for professional development and graduate study.
