Fall 2023 Athletes of the Week

November 13, 2023

Field Hockey

This player helped inspire her team in their final game against KO last Friday by playing with great intensity, speed, and skill all over the field. She scored a goal to tie the game with 4 minutes left and her hustle and focus helped to put her teammates into a goal scoring opportunity 40 seconds into the OT. Her contributions have been significant throughout the season, but she made a huge difference in this final game, and she helped to bring our season to an exciting finish. Congratulations to Ella Aitken!!

Cross Country

This past Saturday the Cross Country team raced at the New England’s Division 1 championship race. Varsity placed 5th out of 14 teams which is the best Porter’s XC has done at New England’s in at least 15 years – maybe even the best ever. There were many personal bests, but the one we want to highlight today came from a runner in the JV race. A dedicated veteran cross country runner, this runner is willing to do whatever we need her to do. It was an absolute joy to see her race this weekend as she broke 25 minutes for the first time in her high school cross country career. She passed nearly fifteen other runners as she flew to the finish line with a time of 24:49. We are excited for our future with this runner—Sammy Flibbert!

Soccer

The third athlete of the week is part of the Varsity Soccer team’s undefeated season (2nd time in program history). Mentally and athletically this student is at the highest level – nothing fazes her as she shows consistency in her quality in the good and the challenging moments. This athlete could play play in any position on the field and excel. This past week she scored a hat trick (as a defender) and kept a calm head in some difficult moments vs. Cheshire. Yesterday she was selected to play in the WWNEPSSA all star game and recently was awarded the Founder’s League award for her fantastic performances this season. This week’s athlete of the week goes to the legend Margaret Judge!

Soccer

This player is someone who always gives 100% on the field, no matter the challenge. She maintains composure and keeps her stick down, staying focused on her main job of clearing balls out of the defensive zone and out of danger. She is a wonderful teammate who always supports the people around her and she never hesitates to work harder when needed, persevering through many challenging game situations this season. In our most recent match against Pomfret, this player helped to shut down plays in at least 18 penalty corners, which helped bring us to a 0-0 tie and brief OT period. She has made a huge difference in our games all season and she is someone we know we can count on each game!! Fiona Gosk!

Soccer

This 3rds soccer player has been a strong leader and player on the team all season, becoming one of the most consequential players both on and off the field for our team. On the field she is always the game strategist and ball distributor, helping the team take control of the game. Off the field she is a committed captain, making an impact on the team with her leadership skills and her care and attention to every player’s needs. Congratulations Karen Fang.

Strength Star

A team leader who always brings their dance moves into the weight room. Helen Shearon!!

Cross Country

On Saturday, Porter’s cross country raced another soggy meet and brought home another win, this time against Westy at AOF. It was our Senior Day and the entire team ran a strong and smart race on a wet and muddy course. Though Saturday was for celebrating our seniors (who we love and had an awesome race), today we want to recognize an outstanding performance from a 9th grade runner. This runner brings energy and enthusiasm to every practice and meet. She is ready and eager to work hard and to be challenged. On Saturday she ran arguably her best race of the season so far, closing quite a large gap between herself and the first place runner in the last 400 meters. Though she just missed first place, she gave the race all that she had. We nominate Bella McLaughlin for AOTW this week. We also want to acknowledge the group of devoted Porter’s fans who came out to watch us race in the rain. Thank you for braving the weather and cheering us to victory and then celebrating our win with us!

Soccer

This week’s second Athlete of the Week is the most selfless, hardworking, consistent and intelligent of team mates. Over the years she has put in the work and showed patience when waiting for her opportunity. This student athlete leads by example, a trait that all of the best leaders demonstrate. She’s fast, technical, coachable and will always put someone else ahead of herself for any type of limelight. She is one of the reasons that the Varsity soccer team has only conceded 4 goals in 11 games and are currently unbeaten, this past week she was phenomenal in the teams win at Sacred Heart and managed to tie the game against Loomis with a goal when only 90 seconds remaining on the clock. Congratulations to this weeks athlete of the week, Sara Babigian!

Strength Star

Willing to try every exercise and continues to put their best foot forward each day. Understands the importance of what it means to have a functional core, awesome job! Way to go, Emma Peterson!

Cross Country

The Porter’s Cross Country team dominated the Gordy Glover invitational at Suffield Academy last Saturday with a team score of 26 points. This was a major accomplishment, one of the biggest invitationals of the season – show some love for Cross Country! (everyone clap) While this was a full team effort, we would especially like to acknowledge one standout runner. She rounded out our top 5 with an 8th place overall finish. She is a model runner, teammate, and leader on our team. This week we nominate our fearless and devoted captain, Lauren Wallace!

Equestrian

Let’s also show our appreciation for our Equestrian team who placed first at their IEA show last weekend. This is an outstanding accomplishment and we are very proud of you. Our other athlete of the week is one of the team’s riders who tried a new division at this competition, she stayed focused the entire time and kept her own and her teammates’ positive energy up throughout the day. Congratulations to our second athlete of the week, Lydia Winkowski!

Strength Star

This week’s Strength Star has a bubbly personality and always lifts everyone’s energy all while getting the workout done properly. She is also a positive role model for her peers! Congratulations Eliza Mikheev!

Volleyball

Tenley D. This player has been on fire in volleyball! Her consistent serves and good attitude were instrumental in the 3rds team’s first win of the season. She opened the game with 8 serves in a row. She has been a supportive and energetic captain, always willing to help other players. Tenley Davis, keep it up!

Cross Country

Sophia SY. This New Girl runner is just one of the many great additions to our cross country team this year. She has worked hard and steadily improved throughout our first few weeks together. On Friday she showed off her incredible Just Dance skills during practice, and then on Saturday she dazzled us again, but this time with her running skills as she came in 4th overall and for the team in our sweep over Miss Hall’s School. Our AOTW nomination goes to Sophia Seraile Yam!

Strength Stars

Ella K. Always brings the energy, encourages others and always knows how to have fun while working out. Awesome job, Ella!

Julia K. (Not pictured) Comes to class eager to learn and continuously tries to work on the proper technique and form. Fully embodies the meaning of “it is not about the amount of weight you can lift, it is about the amount you can lift correctly”. Nice work Julia, keep up the great work!

Sissi L. (Not pictured) Always gives a 100% in the class, only seeks attention to correct form and makes sure she is on task. Understands the importance and impact of tempo and does not rush through the exercises.

Cross country

Cross country had an excellent race at Taft on Saturday. Many of the athletes hit their personal best times and we are excited about a promising season ahead! For one of our standout runners, this was her first truly competitive cross country race since last week’s race was not scored. This runner came in 4th overall and first for our team with a time of 21 minutes. Incredible! Our nominee for AOTW this week is Savannah Cox.

Varsity Soccer

Julia Wagstaff showed why she is one of the top defenders in the Prep leagues with two flawless displays this past week. With and without the ball Julia shows poise and determination as she contributed towards two wins and two shutouts against Kingswood Oxford and Greenwich Academy. Defensive duties often go unnoticed, but time and time again Julia never gives the opponents forward a moment to think and never hesitates to put her body on the line to stop a shot or a cross. This week’s athlete of the week is the team’s rock and always leads by example when she is on the field. Congratulations to Julia Wagstaff.
