Winter 2023-2024 Athletes of the Week

February 26

Swim

This swimmer’s mind, body and spirit were in true harmony this weekend as she rode the crest of the green wave to four best times and four top eight finishes in her individual events and relay legs. While coaches are always happy to see an athlete’s hard work, dedication and perseverance pay off – the most rewarding aspect of the day was witnessing the pure joy and camaraderie that this swimmer shared with her teammates as she helped lead our team to a second place finish at Founders League Championships. More fast swims are on the horizon, and we can’t wait to see what Ruthie Riccobon will accomplish at our New England Championships next weekend!!

Swim

This swimmer had a fantastic Founders League Championships. She was a member of the 200 Medley Relay that placed 3rd, the 400 Freestyle Relay that placed 2nd, won the 100 Free and the 200 IM with a time of 2:05.31 that broke the school’s varsity record set back in 2005 by Porter’s Hall of Fame member and All American Katherine Fugge. We are excited to see what this swimmer will accomplish at the NEPSAC DII Championships this Saturday. This athlete of the week is Savannah Bowers!

Basketball

This next nomination was selected as a 2024 NEPSAC All-Star and averaged 16 points per game this season along with 7.2 rebounds (the leading rebounder on the varsity basketball team) and 3.1 assists. She accumulated 894 points over her Miss Porter’s career. If not for a lost season due to COVID, there is no doubt her name would be included on the 1,000 point banner considering she averaged around 300 points a season!! Quite remarkable. Congratulations to our captain and athlete of the week, Mari Lee on an outstanding Miss Porter’s career! We wish her the best as she continues her basketball journey at Pace University next year.

Strength Star

This Strength Star exhibits determination at all levels. Always pushing to do their best no matter the challenge. The exercise that is most empowering and gets them excited to put their best effort forward is the RDL. Congrats on understanding your limits and knowing when to push through them, Sofia Garza!

Ski

This Porter’s Alpine Race Team athlete is new to the team but has quickly established herself as a contender. Finishing every run in every race, qualifying and competing in last week’s New England Prep School Championships and most recently placing 1st for girls and 3rd overall in the Brigham Ski League JV Slalom Race – leading Porter’s to 1st place – Ellie Riva!

Strength Star

This strength star has earned the spotlight. One who is motivated, remains focused at all times, makes every single rep count, and has a fierce look that lets you know she is ready to take on the workout. Congrats on all your hard work in the weight room, Jeva Onduru!

Basketball

This player is thirds basketball’s defensive specialist! In our victory against Williston, she caused numerous tie-ups and stole the ball several times, leading to many fast break opportunities. She’s a hard worker and never is without a smile and encouragement for her teammates. We’d like to nominate Rui Wang!

Strength Star

This strength star understands what it means to step up as a team leader and to put in the work outside of the workout room. They are making strides on each run. Whether it is the campus loop or up at the Hill-Stead, constant progress is being made. Keep up the great progress, Bea Kibler!

Ski

This racer led the Porter’s Alpine Race Team to victory over 3 other Brigham Ski League girls teams in our 1st Giant Slalom race of the season held at Mohawk Mountain on January 24. Coming in 2nd place individually for the girls and 6th place overall boys and girls. Isa Kao!

Swim

This swimmer leads by doing. She is always willing to do what the coaches ask and always step up when needed. At the Choate meet she won the 200 IM and was a member of the winning 400 Freestyle Relay. Savannah Cox!

Strength Star

Consistently improving in all areas. Finding that some of their initial challenging exercises are now becoming a new favorite part of their workout. Always brings a positive and ready-to-go attitude to the workout room. Awesome job, Cara Smith!

Basketball

This 3rds basketball player was instrumental in 3rds basketball’s win against Miss Hall’s, scoring five points including their first three pointer of the year. Against Marvelwood this weekend, they showed their skill on defense, fighting for the ball and creating several tie-ups that resulted in the possession coming back to Porter’s. As co-captain they are a tremendous leader. In the words of one of their teammates, “we can’t win without them!” Congratulations Alyx Bardoe!

Basketball

This player returned to the court last week after missing games due to a finger injury. In a 64-53 win over KO, this player had 12 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal. She followed that game with a 24-point performance, leading the team Saturday in a blow-out win at Frederick Gunn. This player has a great work ethic and the development of her game shows this. Izzy Grube is deserving of AOTW!

Strength Star

This athlete understands that the goal is not how much weight you can lift, but how much weight you can lift correctly. The outcome is much greater in return. Nice work on turning weaknesses into strengths. Keep up the great work, Maggie Maas.

Squash

Varsity Squash would like to nominate a team member who embodies the work ethic, intensity, composure, patience and perseverance necessary to evolve as an athlete and squash player. This player is a cerebral player who embraces the challenges of every match trying to figure out how to nullify her opponent’s strengths while accentuating her own. She does an amazing job of formulating an initial match strategy and then fine tuning it as the match evolves. Mary Zhang!

Squash

This player has shown tremendous growth – she has become more agile on the court, returning to the T, hitting drop shots, deep serves but most importantly taking charge of the game, making a comeback every time she loses a point. Her determination and resilience have been crucial to her winning streak. Last week against Westminster 4 -1 and this week against Deerfield 3 – 0. Well done Charisse Thorpe!

Strength Star

Always excited for every strength session, shows improvement with each exercise and always makes sure to have proper form. Nice work, Rachel Burwick!
