Winter 2022-23 Athletes of the Week

February 20, 2023

JV Squash

This player consistently puts forth her best effort in both practice and competition. Her commitment to improving her game has propelled her up the JV ladder and pushed her teammates to be at the top of their game. On Saturday, this player bounced back after a hard-fought 2-3 loss against Berkshire on Wednesday, to win both her matches in our tri-match. After handily defeating her Hopkins opponent 3-0, she battled in an intense back-and-forth match with her Westminster rival, ultimately winning 3-2. This week’s athlete of the week is Maddie BeVier!

JV Basketball

This athlete is a consistent contributor to JV success and has been a critical member of the team since their first year with the squad. Shooting upwards of 50% and more overall, they’ve been integral to our victories and the making of last season’s undefeated record and this season’s current 10-1 record. They work hard in practice, help organize and facilitate drills, provide opportunities on the court for their teammates to play and to learn. All the hallmarks of a great teammate and a great basketball athlete. Congratulations Helen Shearon!

Varsity Basketball

This player had a phenomenal week, scoring 41 points over two games.  This includes a career high 28 against Berkshire on Saturday.  In addition, this athlete also contributed 6 rebounds and 3 assists over these contests.  Her work ethic is exemplary and it shows in her development as a player.  We are so proud of Sam! Congratulations Sam Battle on being this week’s athlete of the week!

Ski Team

This Porter’s Alpine Race Team athlete consistently shows that the “Journey” is just as important as the “Result.” Always smiling and cheerful – bringing laughter to all of her teammates by telling great funny stories and able to laugh at her own idiosyncrasies in her life and ski racing. Willing to try new challenges outside her comfort zone – knowing that the important thing is to have fun and experience life. Congratulations Ainsley Hoekzema!

JV Basketball

This player has been a standout defensive phenom since the beginning of JV basketball. In our most recent game against Northfield Mt. Hermon, she dominated the court and helped us shut down their three offensive shooters with her dynamic play. She has a great sense of awareness on the court and is a selfless team player, willing to take a spot on the bench if it gives younger players a chance to develop and improve. She has the type of team mentality with relentless individual focus on excellence that makes an entire squad better. Congratulations to Lauren Baker for being chosen as this week’s athlete of the week.

3rds / JV Basketball

This athlete stepped up from 3rds to support JV while two of our players were abroad in France. Their efforts in the gym before, after, and during practice did not go unnoticed. Their willingness to stay behind and work on their shooting has allowed them to become a greater offensive threat in game. They are the type of player that is highly coachable and earnest in their desire to improve. With continued intentional effort, I don’t doubt that they will be making plays in the seasons ahead. Congratulations to Alyx Bardoe!

Swimming

This swimmer won both of her events against Kent 200 IM and 100 Breast at the Kent meet as well as had fast relay splits in both the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay. She works hard at every set, everyday at practice! Congratulations Savannah Cox!

Ski Team

During this past weekend, rider Natalia Levesque won her JV class on the flat, out of 7 teams, in our postseason Zone 1, Region 8 qualifiers! This qualified her for IEA Zone 1 Finals that will take place on April 2 at the Big E Fair Grounds. She will compete against riders from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont! GO NAT!

Varsity Basketball

In two games last week, this player had a total of 17 rebounds, 3 assists, 8 deflections, 6 steals, and 2 blocks.  We are a team that struggles to rebound, but she is consistently battling for the ball inside and her aggressive play makes a big difference for us when she’s on the floor.  This athlete is always a huge cheerleader for every player on the team and makes sure every single player feels valued and supported. We are a better team when she’s on the floor! Congratulations to this week’s Athlete of the Week, Ava Robertson!

Ski Team

After only 2 days of on snow training before our 1st Brigham Ski League Varsity Giant Slalom race – this athlete put together 2 great runs giving her a 4th place individual title against all female competitors and as a co-captain she led the Porter’s Alpine Race Team to a 2nd Place team finish. In our second race of the season – a fun, challenging slalom – she again led the team to a 2nd Place team finish, but moved herself up to 2nd place missing the win by only 2/10’s of a second after two combined run times.

Way to Go – Olivia LaPointe!!

Diving

She has worked incredibly hard the last 4 years, always eager to learn new dives, and looking for ways she can always improve. She puts everything into every dive she does. She hit all 6 of her dives during competition after having a less than stellar warm up. I could tell she was nervous because of it going into competition but put that aside and did all of her dives exactly how she needed to, to win and beat the school record. Congratulations Jaya Magavi!

JV Basketball

Showcasing both coach-ability and a determination to improve, the player implemented feedback from practice into her performance during our game against Kent. With strong protection of the ball and by controlling the defense, she drove the lane to create space to shoot. In her greatest moment against Kent, she recovered defensively to block a shot from her own turnover against her defender, got the rebound, helped her team move the ball back up the court, where again the ball turned over, so she stole it back, drove the lane and made a two-point play. As effective on offense as she was on defense during that 2-3 minute stretch, Evelyn brought the heart and hustle of an entire squad. Congratulations Evelyn Sanchez on being this week’s athlete of the week.

JV Squash

This player’s win was vital in propelling the JV squash team to a 4-3 victory over Pomfret on Saturday. Despite dropping the first game, she remained cool, calm, and collected, battling back to win her match 3-2. On the court, this player controlled the pace of play and kept her opponent guessing with well-placed shots. She is also a supportive teammate, offering feedback and encouragement. This week’s athlete of the week is Tenzin Tara!
