Spring 2023 Athletes of the Week

May 29, 2023

Golf

This player saved her best for last. On her senior night and final Porter’s golf match, she earned her only individual win of her Porter’s golf career, and the only individual win for the team in our match against Westminster. This golfer entered the 7th hole in a one hole deficit. She then went on to win the 7th and 8th hole and halved (tied) the final 9th hole to secure the victory. I hope she decides to continue to play golf competitively or as a hobby as she heads off to Upenn next year. The week’s athlete of the week is Madison Donelson.

Track & Field

This athlete had two standout performances at the Division 1 New England Championships this past Saturday. She finished with the 1500 and 3000m with personal best times of the season. Particularly impressive In the 3000, she chopped about 15 seconds off of her best time running with a smile on her face and eyes half shut while it was pouring rain the entire time! Congratulations to Milla Perlman!

Golf

This athlete has been battling against some of the best golfers in New England all year. On Wednesday she won and halved her individual matches and led the team to their first victory of the season against Miss Halls. I am looking forward to seeing what she can do in our last two matches of the season. The athlete of the week is Kathryn Ausere.

Track & Field

The track & field team nominates Nyla Liburd for her phenomenal performance in shot put at the Founder’s League Championship where she finished second overall and continued to get personal bests over the course of her six throws.

Track & Field

The track & field team nominates Kat Meyer for athlete of the week. At Wednesday’s meet, she ran two personal bests in both hurdle events and ran the 4 x 400m relay when we needed a fourth person. Kat is a great team player and gives 100% effort in practices everyday, always going above expectations and asking what else she can work on and do. I know she will continue to make solid improvements throughout the rest of the season.

The track & field team nominates Tenley Davis for athlete of the week. Tenley impressed the coaches on Saturday by running a personal best in the 200m and placing second. Additionally, she ran the lead leg in the 4 x 400m relay and had the fastest split on the team. We can’t wait to see what she does next!

JV Lacrosse

The JV Lacrosse team would like to recommend one player in particular for recognition of the ways in which she shows up for the team each and every day. This player inspires this team through both the example of her determined play and her own quietly confident style of leadership. She is a focused practice player and her hard work between games has allowed her to grow into a skilled stick handler and defender. Last week, when the JV team found itself without a goalie, this player was the first to volunteer to step-in; from her first practice she showed a promising acumen for the position. The greatest challenge that this player creates for her coaches is having to figure out which role will allow her to make the greatest impact on the game, as there is no doubt that she will give her all to any role she is asked to take on. We feel confident that this player’s dedication and skill ensure that she will make an even greater contribution to Porter’s Lacrosse in the coming years. This week’s athlete of the week is Helen Shearon!

Track & Field

The track & field team would like to nominate Ava Robertson as an athlete of the week after winning both the shotput and discus at our home meet last weekend. She is a dedicated individual who is one of the top throwers in the league and also a team player by running the 4 x 400m relay the majority of the meets.

Varisty Lacrosse

This athlete was a standout contributor in Varsity Lacrosse’s thrilling 13-12 win over the Frederick Gunn School last Wednesday at home. This player had FOURTEEN draw controls, massively contributing to Porter’s possession throughout the game. She also tallied an impressive 4 goals and one assist! To top it all off this player is a midfielder and played the entire game, every minute with no sub, an incredible feat on its own, but even more impressive as we were a man down for a lot of the second half due to yellow cards. With 23 seconds left in the game it was 12-12, this player drove to the net, double teamed and scored her 4th goal of the game-the winning goal. Congratulations on a huge performance by Maddie BeVier!

Track & Field

The track & field team would like to nominate this Porter’s athlete for the growth mindset award. Not only are they a hard working athlete who is always on task and asking what more she can do to improve, but she is one of the loudest and most enthusiastic cheerleaders on the team at meets. We love the spirit she evokes towards her teammates and is always so positive. Congratulations, Elizabeth Zee!

Softball

In our last win against MacDuffie, this athlete threw 74 pitches in 5 innings, 62 of them were strikes and she struck out 13 players. She continues to dominate at the plate with some solid hits. She is an important part of our team as we consistently improve week by week. Congratulations, Emma Andrews!

Ultimate

This player was nominated for leading Ultimate to a season opener win against Hotchkiss, with 2 goals, 2 assists, and also for her leadership and preparation. Congratulations, Sarah Azrin!

Varsity Golf

This student started the year off strong. In our first match against Ethel Walker & Wilbraham, she shot a 50 in rough playing conditions and earned our only match win against Ethel Walker. More importantly, she embodied the MPS character out on the course. I received numerous compliments from the Wilbraham coach and parents about this student. In the match, she was playing against an 8th grader from Wilbraham, who was playing in her first ever match. This student kept encouraging and lifting the spirits of her opponent, explained the rules when they applied, share yardages to the student who did not have a range finder. I am thrilled that she is one of our captains and look forward to seeing what she can accomplish in her final year of MPS golf. Congratulations to Carissa Chan on being this week’s student athlete of the week.

Track & Field

Our nomination for athlete of the week goes to an athlete who had a great start to the season by winning shot put last Wednesday at our first meet which happened to be against three other teams! She also is a very kind and helpful teammate who is a wonderful role model to the new throwers assisting them at practices and meets. Congratulations to Nyla Liburd!
